hypetree is a new way to discover independent music.
It's also a new, free way for musicians to get exposure for their songs and albums.

How It Works
All the music on hypetree is uploaded by thousands of independent musicians and labels directly, and there are two main ways to discover it - battle player and radio.

Launch the battle player and you'll see two songs side by side. After listening to each song, pick which one you like better. Simple, right?

Every time you pick a song, you alter that song's interest score, which determines its global ranking among all songs on hypetree. And if you're signed up as a listener, our patent pending algorithm learns your musical tastes based on the music you pick. Listeners can discover songs and save them into playlists, to stream back anytime.

Or, if you're looking for a more casual listening experience, the radio streams hypetree music based on genre and interest score.

hypetree is free for everyone. If you'd like to discover and rate great music, click "Listeners" below for more info. If you'd like to add your music, click "Musicians" below.
Musicians
For independent musicians, bands, and labels, hypetree is the most powerful and affordable tool for self-managed promotion on the web. The hypetree platform allows any music maker to extend the reach of their songs.

Tons of people will hear your song alongside another in the hypetree player. If enough people pick it, you get on the Top 10 or Top 100 on the homepage, and you've got a hit song.

As people interact with your song, we give you all sorts of clear, graphed data. You can use it to see which songs are generating the most buzz.

If someone hears your song and wants to learn more, they go to your simple hypetree profile, which will have links to your website and social networks. You can also accept donations via PayPal.

Oh, and it's free. Seriously. Upload 3 songs for free, and if you want to upload more, it's between 57 and 99 cents per month per song depending on how many you purchase.

Click here to sign up, or email artist relations (trevor@hypetree.com) if you have any questions.
Listeners
hypetree allows fans of new music to rate, save, and discover the best new music by independent musicians. It uses listener behavior across thousands of users to shape its ecosystem.

As a listener, you'll get a custom hypetree station (your username) personalized based on the songs you pick.

We'll save every song you pick and every song you favorite (the star on every song) to your favorites library, where you can organize & share playlists.

Listening to music is free, and you don't even have to sign up to rate and listen. But if you want to save songs and allow us to learn your musical preferences, you'll have to make an account.

Sound like your thing? Click the tab at the upper-right and make your account, or click here to learn all about how to use hypetree to find great music.
Song Approvals
We have a very simple review process to make sure the songs on hypetree meet certain standards. We will never reject a song on the grounds of composition or whether or not we "like" it. We only reject songs if:

1) The sound quality of the recording is so low or distorted that it can't be properly heard.
2) The song name is excessively long or the artist link forwards the user to something that violates our terms.
3) The song is obviously not original and/or the uploader does not have permission from the copyright holder (don't upload Radiohead unless you're Radiohead).
4) The song can be considered legally obscene as defined by the Miller Test.

If you believe your song was rejected and did not violate any of these rules, feel free to contact artist relations at artist relations (trevor@hypetree.com).
Interest Score
The heart of hypetree is the interest score, applied to all songs from the battle player. When people choose one song over another in the player, they determine the changes in the interest score for both songs.

It uses a modified science-y Elo rating system to determine the interest.

All songs start at 1500, and are affected up or down depending on their wins/losses in the battle player.

The score gives musicians clear, non-judgemental feedback on how people feel about their songs.

It's important to remember that a song with a low score doesn't mean it's bad - scores aren't about good or bad, they're about interest.
Advertising
We have sparse advertising throughout the site to help cover the cost of hosting musicians' free songs.

We're the only service of our kind to offer free music promotion, and our non-intrusive ads help us do that.

While we might throw some sponsored material your way from time to time, an advertisement will never interrupt your listening experience or prevent you from enjoying your music.

Who We Are & Our Philosophy
We firmly believe in independent music. When we first announced our service, we had 6,000 people sign up in the first week alone. StumbleUpon even did a case study about it. Around 1,000 of them were musicians, and the remaining 5,000 were music fans. Why all the interest? It's simple: there are a ton of musicians out there who aren't famous, and a ton of people who would love to hear them.

We want to give artists, no matter how obscure or underground, an effective way to get their music heard. Unlike other music sites, hypetree is oriented towards independent, DIY, musicians who don't have the leg up that big PR budgets provide in the promotion world. While our service is open to all musicians, big and small, our platform is a democracy - everyone gets to rate and decide which songs should be at the top ten.

The hypetree team is a group of musicians, designers, web experts, and budding entrepreneurs. It was created by Alex Jae Mitchell (twitter), Michelle Panzironi, (twitter), Trevor Collins and Ben Sklovsky. Born from a university research project and the frustration of several independent musicians, hypetree has grown into a fully-featured platform sponsored and developed by Phrase Media LLC. It's not a faceless company: hypetree is working out of 12 Desbrosses St. in New York City, and you can call anytime at (347) 627-0331.
